Styling 101

Sometimes the only thing standing between a good hair day and a great hair day is the right technique. Here are some hints to fine-tune your daily styling routine.

  • Tip01
Don't rip at tangles in your hair with a brush. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle hair when wet, and a vent brush to remove any snags on dry hair.
  • Tip02
Pull your hair straight back into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic at the nape of your neck. Dress it up by wrapping a 2 centimetres piece of the tail around the elastic and securing with pins underneath. Spray hair with TRESemmé Extra Hold Hairspray to keep it in place.
  • Tip03
Make sure to use the right styling product for your new cut. Ask your stylist which type of styling product they recommend for your particular style. For volume, you probably need a lightweight mousse like Volumising Mousse, and for sleek looks, a styling cream like Smoothing Crème
  • Tip04
For the longest lasting style, build your up-do from a ponytail and manipulate the pony into a bun or a looped style. A ponytail is a strong base for any up-do because elastics will hold longer than any amount of clips and pins.
  • Tip05
If you’re creating a twist, use extra long bobby pins to anchor the style from the beginning and then smaller bobby pins to tuck in the little pieces. The long bobby pins hold larger sections securely to keep hair from falling.
  • Tip06
Finish any up-do with a light misting of Freeze Hold Hairspray to keep the flyaway's under control. Layer on the hair spray to create extra hold.
  • Tip07
Always towel dry your hair well to remove excess water and cut down on your styling time.
  • Tip08
Use a vent brush to distribute product throughout your hair when damp. You want the most even application possible - styling products are only effective where they are applied!
  • Tip09
When blow-drying, dry your hair 90% with a vent brush or a paddle brush to speed up drying time, and then finish with a round brush to smooth your hair.
  • Tip10
Don't use the same towel that you used on your body to dry your hair. Start with a fresh, dry towel or invest in a super-absorbent towel for faster drying.
  • Tip11
If you're going to blow-dry your hair, don't wait more than 20 minutes after you get out of the shower to start. Begin blow-drying before your hair is more than 30% dry to get maximum volume and prevent stubborn cowlicks.
  • Tip12
Always use Heat Tamer Protective Spray when styling with heat – you can even spray it right on your roots to protect your scalp from heat and dryness.
  • Tip13
If your scalp is dry and sensitive turn your dryer on the medium heat setting when blow drying your roots.
  • Tip14
Don’t be afraid to try any style you can dream up with the right tools and products to protect your hair from damage!
  • Tip15
Give your hair a break from heat styling at least once a week — blow-drying every day can deplete your hair's natural moisture.
  • Tip16
Don't over-dry your hair — the last few minutes of blow-drying is when your hair is most vulnerable to damage. When your hair is almost dry, switch the dryer to the cool setting. This will expose any damp areas and finish the job without damaging your hair.
  • Tip17
It’s essential to add a little texture into hair before creating an up-do, as this will help give the style more hold. Spray Naturals Finishing Spray on almost dry hair, and comb through using fingers. Pull up into a pony.
  • Tip18
Don’t ruin perfect waves with a half-done style. To create a sophisticated half-up look, the trick is to pull hair from the sides into a small pony at the base of the crown. Pin random sections from the crown to the base of the pony, for a natural half-up style. Finish with a few sprays of Naturals Finishing Spray for a soft hold.
  • Tip19
Blow dry the hair in the direction you want your up-do. For instance, if pulling hair into a pony, direct the air flow towards the back of the head. The hair will lay flatter, leaving a smooth finish.
